How to Prepare Your Voice Before a Session

By Alina Petrova, Vocal Coach · 5 min read

The best vocal sessions are won the night before. Here is the routine our coaches give every singer — no mysticism, just what actually keeps a voice agile for hours.

The night before: sleep beats steam

Seven hours of sleep does more for your cords than any tea. Hydrate through the evening, skip the late-night whispering at loud bars, and keep the bedroom air from going bone-dry.

Morning of: warm up like an athlete

Fifteen minutes is enough: lip trills up and down your range, gentle sirens, then two easy run-throughs of the hardest chorus — at half volume. Never "test" your top notes cold; that's how sessions get cancelled.

At the studio: pace the power

Sing the verses first and save belting for take three, when you're warm and the mic already loves you. Sip room-temperature water between takes, and tell your engineer the moment anything feels scratchy — a five-minute rest now saves an hour later.

What to skip

Dairy right before singing, ice-cold drinks, throat-clearing (sip instead), and brand-new allergy meds on session day. Boring? Yes. Effective? Completely.

Sing it with a coach beside you.
