Podcast Mic Technique: Sound Close, Stay Clear
By Nadia Rahman, Podcast Producer · 4 min read
Listeners forgive a lot — except bad mic technique. Four adjustments, learnable in one session, separate amateur-sounding shows from expensive-sounding ones.
1. Find your four inches
A fist's width from mic to mouth is the sweet spot for most voices: close enough for warmth and presence, far enough to survive an excited moment. Mark it with the pop filter and return to it after every sip of water.
2. Speak across the mic, not into it
Angle the mic slightly off-axis and your plosives sail past the capsule instead of detonating on it. P-pops vanish, and sibilance softens — no plugin required.
3. Lean back to laugh
Laughter is 10 dB louder than speech and it clips everything. Train yourself to pull back six inches the instant a laugh starts. Your editor — and your listeners' ears — will thank you.
4. Stay still, stay consistent
Swivel chairs, tapping pens, and drifting heads make edits audible. Plant your feet, keep papers off the table, and let the conversation move — not your distance from the mic.
Practice it in a real podcast room.
